Every Seoul tour guide will point you to Myongdong and Itaewon as the main shopping destinations. Don’t get me wrong – you won’t be disappointed. But if you subscribe to the belief (as I do) that fashion is a serious form of art and just looking at exquisite objects can satiate your fashion hunger, there are also other fabulous destinations in Seoul. Among them is a trendsetting street lined with lots of high fashion boutiques along with artsy cafes, wine lounges and way-too-cool galleries called Garosu-gil (가로수길).
Nicknamed “Designer street”, this area is peppered with small-sized, interesting designer boutiques, each offering unique designer goods and a compelling shopping experience. I was pleasantly surprised to find Doii Lee’s flagship shop there, whose design captivated the audience at Vancouver Fashion week in 2010.

Recently international fashion labels such as Marimekko, H&M and Fossil took note of Garosu-gil’s chic vibe and set up shop here, much to the dismay of many who love the area’s original and unique shopping experience. But it’s too premature for such worries. Garosu-gil is still filled with one-of-a-kind designer shops and its loyal shoppers.
And while moderately-priced goods are also available, this isn’t exactly a bargain hunter’s hangout. But it sure will quench your fashion thirst and delight your senses.
