Motivated by a Korean TV show “TastyRoad” (O’live/ Sat 11pm), “Tasty Road to Korea” will introduce several Korean restaurants with authentic Korean cuisine in Toronto according to certain themes.

The first theme of Tasty Road to Korea was “3 Korean Food to Survive Canadian WInter” which introduced Potato Pork Bone Soup, Soft Tofu Stew and Army Stew. And the second theme of Tasty Road to Korea is “3 Non- spicy Korean Food.”  This theme aims to help people to try Korean food who are not used to or not fond of spicy flavor. The first non-spicy food I introduced last time was “Handmade Chopped Noodles (Kalguksu 칼국수).” The second non-spicy food was “Korean BBQ.” And today, I am introducing “Bulgogi (불고기).”

Bulgogi consists of marinated beef and is cooked in various ways. Usually it is either grilled on a hot grill or boiled into soup. “Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu (북창동 순두부 돌솥밥)” on 691 Bloor street. west offers Bulgogi in both ways and I tried Ttukbaegi Bulgogi(뚝배기 불고기; Hot Pot Bulgogi).

Ttukbaegi Bulgogi is a soup boiled in a hot pot with marinated beef, mushroom, carrot, green onion, cellophane (yam) noodles etc. It is a substantial and healthy meal with beef and vegetables together. Actually, Bulgogi was ranked 23th on “World’s 50 most delicious foods” compiled by CNN in 2011 (http://travel.cnn.com/explorations/eat/readers-choice-worlds-50-most-delicious-foods-012321). According to its description, “A bowl of bulgogi gives everything you need in a balanced diet — carbohydrate (rice), protein (beef and egg), vitamins and minerals (mixed vegetables), and fat (oil). Four good reasons to order a second bowl.”

When we roast Bulgogi on a hot grill, we eat it wrapped with vegetables and several Korean sauces. In case of Ttukbaegi Bulgogi, we eat with a bowl of rice like other soups. The soup is sweet so that any people can enjoy it. And the hot pot keeps the soup warm as if it has just been made.

The rice served with Ttukbaegi Bulgogi is special because it is also cooked in a hot pot, which makes rice more delicious. And I have been asked by my friends in Toronto of why the color of Korean rice is sometimes different. It is because we mix several kinds of grains to make rice more healthy and delicious.
