On Sunday June 29th at 11:00AM, there was a 64th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War commemorative ceremony at the Monument to the Canadian Fallen.
The ceremony was attended by the honorable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada, as well as the honorable Park Sung Choon, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The ministers were joined at the Monument to Canadian Fallen by His Excellency Cho Hee-yong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Canada, Senator Yonah Martin, Rear-Admiral Peter Ellis, expeditionary, Canadian Joint Operations Command, and members of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada. Various organizations and community members also joined to honor the veterans including diplomatic corps from the combatant nations, Department of National Defence, and the local Korean-Canadian community.
Immediately following the ceremony, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea hosted a lunch reception for all attended Korean War veterans and the distinguished guests at the Chateau Laurier Hotel, Drawing Room. During the reception, Minister Park presented the Government of the Republic of Korea in conferring the Order of Civil Merit of the Republic of Korea to Mr. Vince Courtenay, a Korean War Veteran who dedicated many years of his life to volunteering for Korean War veterans and the Republic of Korea. In addition to that, Minister Park presented the ‘Ambassador for Peace’ Medals to 12 Canadian Korean War veterans for their dedicated service during the Korean War.
Also, in a message of remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers to ensure lasting freedom for future generations, Korean-Canadian children delivered hand-written thank you letters to the Korean War Veterans.
