Korean dramas enjoyed an immense public popularity in 2015 and 2016 surely has a great lineup for K-dramas from Song Joong Ki, Yoo Seung Ho, Park Hae Jin, Song Hye Kyo to many more! I would like to introduce some K-dramas that is making/have made a great hit in first few months of 2016.

tvN – Reply 1988

“응답하라 1988”

(2015.11.06 – 2016.01.16)

Directed by: Shin Won Ho / Written by: Lee Ou Jeong

Starring: Lee Hyeri, Park Bo Gum, Go Gyung Pyo, Ryu Jun Yeol, Lee Dong Whi

Nationwide Rating: 18.8% (Nielson Korea)

Reply 1988 is the third installment of the Reply series following the success of Reply 1997 and Reply 1994. The production crew has stated that it is a comic drama that you can relate to through tears and laughter, as you can feel the affection among the families and the neighbors with the analogue-like scent and memories of 1988.

Even though, the drama has already been concluded on January 16th, viewers are still upset with the ending, where Taek (Park Bo Gun) became the husband instead of Jung Hwan (Ryu Jun Yeol). There were even new acronyms like 어남택 or 어남류 created, meaning that the husband will be Taek or Jung Hwan (whoever they support) after all. Viewership ratings of the final episode was 18.8%, making it the highest rated drama in Korean cable television history.

tvN – Cheese in the Trap

(2016.01.04 – 2016.03.01)

Directed by: Lee Yoon Jung / Written by: Kim Nam Hee, Go Sun Hee

Starring: Park Hae Jin, Kim Go Eun, Seo Kang Joon, Lee Sung Kyeong, Nam Joo Hyuk, Park Min Ji

Nationwide Rating: 6.9% (Nielson Korea)

Cheese in the Trap has been greatly expected by many fans of the webtoon, as it is a drama based on the webtoon, Cheese in the Trap, by Soonkki. It is about a female university student named Hong Seol (Kim Go Eun) and her relationship between her senior, Yoo Jung (Park Hae Jin). Hong Seol is an intelligent, faithful, yet a very normal girl. On the other hand, Yoo Jung is the perfect dream boy a girl could imagine but he is also hiding his dark side. It is just very mysterious and I am very curious to find out the secrets that he is hiding.

SBS – Remember: War of the Son

“리멤버: 아들의 전쟁”

(2015.12.09- 2016.02.18)

Directed by: Lee Chang Min/ Written by: Yoon Hyun Ho

Starring: Yoo Seung Ho, Park Min Young, Nam Gung Min, Park Sung Woong

Nationwide Rating: 20.3% (Nielson Korea)

Remember tells the story of Seo Jin Woo (Yoo Seung Ho), who has a special condition called Hyperthymesia, which allows him to remember everything in perfect detail. When his father was wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death, Jin Woo decided to become a lawyer and prove innocence of his father. The road to justice is not easy but becomes even harder when Jin Woo gets diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease.

KBS2 – Descendants of the Sun

“태양의 후예”

Starring: Song Joong Ki, Song Hye Kyo, Kim Ji Won, Jin Goo, Onew

Nationwide Rating: 28.5% (Nielson Korea)

Descendants of the Sun is an upcoming drama that set to premiere on February 24th! It is highly anticipated, because this is the first drama Song Joong Ki has filmed after he discharged from the army.

UN peacekeeping troops are dispatched to the war-torn country and Captain Yoo Shi Jin (Song Joong Ki), team leader of the Sepcial Warfare Command unit meets Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo) who is a volunteer doctor. They get closer as they learn to be considerate of each other in disaster and disease stricken zones and they slowly fall in love.

tvN – Signal

(2016.01.22 ~ 2016.03.12)

Directed by: Kim Won Seok / Written by: Kim Eun Hee

Starring: Kim Hye Soo, Lee Jae Hoon, Cho Jin Woong

Nationwide Rating: 12.5% (Nielson Korea)

Detectives from the present and a detective from the 1980’s communicate through a mysterious walkie talkie exactly at 11:23 P.M. every night. Together, they solve a long-time unsolved murder case but to even prevent them from ever taking place. Moreover, the criminal case that is depicted in the drama is  based on a true incident that occurred in Hwaseong between 1986 to 1991.

It is highly praised as a well-made drama and has definitely won all hearts from the viewers, due to high quality of work and an interesting story plot filled with suspense and thrills. Most importantly, an exceptional performance from skilled actors and detailed directing from the crew is simply superb.

I am to inform you that this is just my personal opinions, and would love to read your comments of your personal favourites! :)
