Just like there are dozens of delicious food/snacks that you can enjoy during the cold winter; there are lots of popular Korean summer foods that will cool you down during the hot summer as well. Staying in Korea during the hottest (and not to mention, but humid as well) of the year can definitely make you energy less! So I will introduce you to some of cool Korean summer foods that will regain your lost appetite and help you stave off the sweltering heat!
Korean Ice Creams
I can definitely say that Korean Ice Creams are probably the best in the world, and is one of the best way to stave off the sweltering heat as well. We have lots of really cool, sometimes strange-looking, unique, yet delicious and sweet ice creams. It is always fun choosing what to eat, as they vary in sizes, shapes and flavours. If you have difficulty choosing what to eat (like me), you should try out the classic Korean ice cream, the Merona or Nugabar! You can get them easily in convenience stores and supermarkets for a very very cheap price and beat the heat, which is a win-win!
I also love eating Patbingsu, which is considered to be one of the most popular summer treats in Korea. It is a shaved ice mixed with ice cream, soy bean sauce, milk, fruits, syrup, candies, rice cakes and many more toppings! There are different types of Bingsu, depending on which ingredient it is mostly made up of. Very famous one is the traditional Sweet Red Bean Bingsu, where it is just simply made up of shaved frozen milk with some soy bean sauce. There are more crazy styles of bingsus like the Fruit Bingsu, Green Tea Bingsu and Rice Cake Bingsu! These are so popular that you won’t see a single café without any Patbingsu during the summer!!
Naengmyeon is a type of cold noodles and it’s an extremely popular summer food in Korea. It makes it even more better as it is filled with variety of healthy ingredients. They usually come in large stainless bowls to keep the food as cold as possible! This plain dish of noodles originating from North Korea has many different versions of it; but the most popular ones are the Mul Naengmyeon and the Bibim Naengmyeon. If you are looking for some mild cold noodles, shoot for the Mul Naengmyeon. If you want something a little spicier with a half boiled egg, thin slices of cucumbers and beef, Bibim Naengmyeon is the answer!
Samgyetang can definitely help you to regain your lost appetite and energize! Koreans eat hot healthy dishes like Samgyetang in summer to survive the hot summer! I guess most of you found that ironic, but it’s because there is a saying, “yi-yeol-chi-yeol (이열치열)”, which means to fight heat by heat. Samgyetang is a bowl with a whole chicken stuffed with rice, garlic, nuts and ginseung. This extremely nutritious dish can regain your internal warmth in the body, giving you a massive energy boost.
At the top of my list is definitely Kongguksu! Kongguksu is seriously the reason why I look forward to summer. Kongguksu is cold noodles served with chilled soy bean broth made out of ground beans. The broth is very think yet, milky and creamy served with cucumbers and some ice cubes. Some people like to add a tablespoon of sugar, to make it even sweeter! Kongguksu is definitely another good dish for those who have lost their appetite.
