Korea and Canada have enjoyed a long and positive history of relations that is marked by true friendship and sharing of important universal values. It first began with Canadian missionaries and teachers who went to Korea and made significant contributions to the development of Korean society. Later, more than 26,000 Canadian troops participated in the Korean War (1950-53) and 516 of them lost their lives in defense of freedom and democracy in the Republic of Korea. Relations between Korea and Canada have expanded on multiple levels ever since, especially in the economic, political and cultural spheres.
Perhaps one of the strongest areas in Korea-Canada relations can be seen in the people-to-people and cultural exchanges. An average of more than 7,000 Koreans visited Canada per year between 1998 and 2007, with now more than 200,000 Koreans calling Canada home. As well, there are presently more than 20,000 Canadians living in South Korea, with more than 5,000 of them English teachers. More recently, interest in Korean culture has been significantly enhanced by the recent global popularity of PSY and his hit video and song “Gangnam Style,” which broke the record for the most hits on YouTube.
2013 marked the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Korea and Canada. The Korea-Canada Blog was established to mark this special occasion as well as to further strengthen the cultural exchanges and special friendship between the two countries. The bloggers from across Canada with a deep interest in Korea-Canada relations, who will present stories in both English and French to more than 400,000 readers and 203 countries around the globe about all things Korean within the context of Canada.
