I tend to visibly drool every time I walk down a grocery store aisle. I love to eat. I can’t cook but I love to eat. This is why you’ll find me grabbing at snacks, candies, and other goodies whenever I go shopping at Lotte Mart in Korea. What is Lotte Mart? It’s a hypermarket. What is a hypermarket? It’s a superstore combining a supermarket and a department store. Korea’s Lotte Mart is easily compared to Canada’s Loblaws.
Let me tell you about my 7 go-to snacks from Korea. By “go-to,” I mean at least several times a day.
뿌셔뿌셔: ppusyeo ppusyeo
Ok, I didn’t know that eating uncooked ramen noodles wasn’t a thing until we moved to Canada. I just ate it so casually that my friends asked if I didn’t know how to boil water. Essentially, you’re supposed to smash up the noodles and sprinkle it with the spice pack (various flavours including: bbq, bulgogi, spicy chicken, etc.) before you eat it. I’ve eaten 3 of these in a row once.
참붕어싸만코: cham boong-uh ssa man ko
Have you ever tried Bungeoppang before? It’s a Korean pastry like the Japanese fish-shaped pastry taiyaki. WELL, this snack is basically an ice-cream sandwich Bungeoppang with a sweet red bean taste that isn’t overwhelming at all. It’s amazing.
I love mochi and rice cake, okay? These are chocolate covered mochi pies with chocolate filling. I ate so much of it as a kid I’m surprised I didn’t choke on it when I gulped it down.
초코파이맡차라떼: choco pie matcha latte
Choco Pies in Korea are basically a staple food item. Just kidding. But it’s like America’s Twinkies. You get what I mean? Anyways, these are Choco Pie with the same marshmallow filling but as a green tea biscuit. My goodness.
뻬뻬로: pepero (white cookie)

Korea has Pepero Day which is similar to Valentine’s Day, except it’s held on November 11 every year. You show affection to friends and loved ones by gifting them Pepero which come in a wide variety of flavours. It’s like Pocky so it’s a thin cookie stick dipped in chocolate and cookie crumbles. My favourite flavour is the white cookie one and I gift it to myself more than once a year. How about that.
청포도캔디: chung podo candy
These green apple flavoured hard candies probably contributed to my many childhood cavities. As advertised on the packaging, the company is touting VITAMIN C. Perfect—I’ll be choosing these over fruit any day anyways.

This is a carbonated soft drink that is milk and yogurt flavoured producing a creamy taste. What a combination! Milkis is available in orange, strawberry, mango, melon, banana, and classic (regular) flavors. I personally love to make a Milkis fruit punch in the summertime.
Let me tell ya: choosing only 7 of my favourite Korean snacks was a challenge. My trouble in life is that there are just so many amazing foods to eat with so little time.
