Name: Denada Skera
I know what you’re thinking. Who is Denada? What does she know about Korean culture? Well, I’m currently an acting student at Seneca College here in Toronto but I’m also a big foodie and working on a fashion/clothing line. To be honest, in regard to Korean culture, I’m still learning.
I started small with K-pop (which is an oxymoron in itself even though it is such a small part of Korean culture). It all started when I was in grade seven and my friend at the time wouldn’t stop talking about BIGBANG. While BIGBANG initially sparked my interest in K-pop (thank you G-Dragon), it wouldn’t be until years later when the Wonder Girls (RIP) would truly steal my heart with Be My Baby. The song opens with a whispered “JYP” which I learned was a South Korean entertainment company (one of the top ones) and the line, “And the Wonder Girls, we’re back” Did I know where they went? Absolutely not, but boy was I glad they were back, never mind where they’d gone. I later learned that when a K-pop group or soloist releases a new album or mini album (usually consisting of 4–6 songs) after debuting it’s called a “comeback.” Comebacks consist of a whole new concept and theme and sometimes generate the most extensive fan theories I’ve ever seen (yes, I’m looking at you EXO—please chill). Hence why the Wonder Girls were “back.” Ultimately, I’d like to thank BIGBANG and the Wonder Girls for getting me into K-pop and ultimately Korean culture. (I’ve even started to learn Korean!)
With all that being said, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in Albania on November 13th, 1994. We didn’t stay long in Albania after I was born and moved to America where I lived in Virginia for five years. Since getting a green card is incredibly difficult my family and I ended up moving to Toronto. And I’ve been here since. I know this sounds like I’ve never left Toronto, but I do love travelling and currently Japan is one of my favourite countries in the world (I haven’t been to Korea yet ;))
Essentially what I like and what interests me in Korean culture is what I’ve already fallen in love with in Western culture. I’m a big fan of music and movies (as an actor I really hope I like movies or I’ve made a mistake). I’m also pretty much convinced that my soulmate is food, as I love discovering, trying and cooking new foods. Finally, I’m a big fan of fashion. I think fashion is such a beautiful form of self-expression and art, and if there’s anything I love more than fashion it’s art.
Anyway, I can’t wait to start blogging the year with everyone and I hope you all enjoy my posts as much as I do writing them!
I don’t know who you guys are, but I love you already.
