K-BEAUTY: Korean Fashion and Beauty

Have you tried the Korean 7 Skin Method?

When it comes to skincare, Koreans are killing the game. Often years ahead of Western skincare in both ingredients and formulations, Koreans are also on the cutting edge of technique. Do you want supple, hydrated skin? Me too! Read on to learn how the Korean 7 Skin Method can make your skin more hydrated, bouncy, and soft!

I first read about the 7 Skin Method on the Glow Recipe website. The Korean 7 Skin Method is the concept of applying very thin layers of a hydrating toner (often referred to in K-beauty circles as a ‘skin’) up to seven times to maximize hydration of the skin. There are a few key points to mention before you get started, it is advised to use an alcohol-free toner, preferably one categorized as “hydrating” or “moisturizing”. The layers should be very thin, no more than a dime size per layer at most. Ensure that the toner you choose is compatible with your skin type, and that the layers, or ‘skins’, are applied very thinly.

After cleansing, apply your hydrating toner of choice by gently pressing and patting a small amount into your skin. As the name suggests, you are to repeat this up to six more times. That’s a lot of patting, so remember to be gentle! Feel free to experiment with the number of layers and types of toners you use, as it will be different for everyone. Depending on which toner I use, the weather, and the general condition of my skin, I find that often three layers suffice.

For some, this toner application method is hydrating enough that they find they don’t require an additional moisturizer. This will depend on your individual skin type and also the season. I find the 7 Skin Method provides all the hydration my combination skin needs during the humid summer weather. During the fall and winter months I follow up with my usual serums and moisturizers.

I experimented with this toner application method using two hydrating toners that I had on hand, both purchased at The Face Shop, a Korean skin care chain. I used the 7 Skin Method for 30 days as part of my morning skincare routine, and the results speak for themselves. With this method my skin is noticeably more hydrated and supple, with a ‘bouncy” feeling to it, even with fewer than the suggested seven layers of toner. This method is completely customizable, so grab your favourite toner and give it a try!

  1. Hi Theresa! Great article! I’ve never tried the 7 Skin Method (although I want to now!), but I definitely have found that patting in toner, rather than swiping it on with a cotton pad really does work better. Have you ever tried adding a pink of salt into skin cleanser? I have the WORST congested skin EVER (hehe) and started doing this in November and it’s almost completely cleared. Life changing!

Can’t wait to read more of your articles :)

    • Hi Emily,
Thank you! Definitely give the 7 Skin Method a try, and let me know how it works for you!
I have not tried adding pink salt to cleanser, but I will look into that, thank you for the tip! Skin congestion is no fun.
