Welcome to this series in which fact and fiction collide! Each month, a cultural aspect of Korea will be covered through dramas and you’ll be asked to tell truth from fantasy. Are you up to the challenge?
For this month’s topic, love is in the air! Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo recently surprised their fans by announcing their upcoming wedding, after denying dating rumours for a long time. The two met during the shooting of Descendants of the Sun, one of the most popular K-drama of 2016. However, they are not the only Korean actors whose romance transcended the screen.
Can you tell which of these famous co-stars ended up dating in real life?
The shelter and his 10 billion won radar
So Ji-sub and Kong Hyo-jin from the Master’s Sun is my personal favourite onscreen couple of all times. Their complicity off camera is undeniable, and they can’t stop praising and complimenting each other. Fans even came up with a name for that electrifying duo: SoGong. Their laughs and their constant teasing indicate that there might be something going on between these two. But what is it?
Unfortunately for the fans, their chemistry is nothing else than friendship. However, they commented in an interview they’ve always felt like they knew each other for a long time.
Nam Joo-hyuk and Lee Sung-kyung
I have to confess I didn’t finish Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo. Nevertheless, it is hard to find a K-drama couple as cute and refreshing. They are both promising athletes, he as a competitive swimmer who seems to accumulate false starts and her, as a talented weightlifter who doesn’t have much chance with boys. When Kim Bok-joo turned for Jung Joon-Hyung’s help to win her crush’s heart (his older brother!), she probably didn’t suspect that their friendship would slowly evolve into something more. But can we say the same about their feelings in real life?
Yesss! Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung Kyung confirmed on April 24th what fan had been suspecting for a long time. The actors are now dating and decided to share the news with the public.
Lee Min-ho and Park Min-young
When you are on a mission to catch and humiliate the men responsible for your father’s death, you have no time for love. Or so thought Lee Yoon-sung, the male lead of City Hunter, before he met Kim Na-Na, a presidential bodyguard protecting some of his targets. Yoon-Sung came to Korea under a false identity, determined to get revenge. Pretending to be a nerdy IT expert working for the Blue House, his pathetic martial art skills doesn’t impress Kim Na-Na. However, it doesn’t stop these two colleagues and enemies to grow closer as the action drama goes on. Could there be something else between the two?
Okay, this was an easy one. Lee Min-ho and Park Min-young did date after they met on set. They explained that working together for long hours help them grow closer. However, the famous couple broke up a few months later due to their busy schedule.
Ah Ji-won and Hyun Bin
For many viewers, they are the incarnation of romance. Ah Ji-won and Hyun Bin from Secret Garden created some of the most epic scenes in K-drama history, including the sit-up training scene and the coffee foam kiss.
After drinking floral wine, the souls of Kim Joo-won, the rich manager of a department store, and Gil Ra-Im, a stunt woman, are mysteriously switched to the other’s body. Despite this strange phenomenon, their social level difference and many uncomfortable situations, their feelings grow stronger as the story goes. What if there were hint of truth in this duo’s romance?
Ah Ji-won and Hyun Bin were good friends and even kept contact after Hyun Bin was discharged from the army, but there are no signs they were dating. However, Hyun Bin did date for two years his co-star from The World That They Live In: Son Hye Kyo.
The best of both worlds
When a doctor suddenly cross over to the webtoon created by her father and meets its fictive characters, her life takes a dangerous, yet exciting turn. After catching the main character’s attention after saving his life, Oh Yeon-Joo is up for one exciting journey between the world of “W” and reality. We can say that Han Hyo-joo and Lee Jong-suk’s are electrifying in this drama, as the pair even won a Best Couple Award in 2016. With their behind-the-scene sweetness and their palpable chemistry, do you think the W co-stars might be hiding something?
Well, rumours are still going strong, and the fact they appeared together on the cover of a fashion magazine in rather intimate poses did not help to calm the fans. To this day, it hasn’t been confirmed if they are dating or not.
Which onscreen couple would you like to see dating in real life?
